Digital Storage

The Perils of DVDs

From the Sunday Times:

... DVDs tend to degrade: according to the report, only half of a collection of disks can be expected to last for 15 years, not a reassuring prospect to those who think about centuries.
O.K., why didn't someone tell me this before I bought all those DVDs? (Maybe someone did; you can't remember.)

This is awful news. Oh, that one sentence is part of the larger story on how its much more expensive for movie studios to archive digital movies in comparison to conventional (i.e. old fashioned) film. An interesting read.
